5:15PM - Bad Kitties!

Yesterday, I went nuts looking for my bluetooth. This is the NEW one I got to replace the old one, which has been missing for over a year. (I waited that long because I know it's in the house, somewhere.)

I just found it. (We're still talking about the new one here.) It was under the couch with the REST of the cat toys. :P

They are SOOOOOOOOO helpful.

Update: at least three of the toys are already back under the couch. The bluetooth is not one of them.

10:58AM - Fanfic recommendation

I usually avoid stories on fanfiction.net because the quality of many is so dismal, but this was a recommendation by an author I enjoy so I thought I’d give it a try. It’s a complete AU wherein Petunia married an ultra-intellectual and Harry is their only (adopted) child. Starts on the day Harry receives his Hogwarts letter.

I was laughing helplessly by Chapter 5 (as far as I’ve gotten). This is truly inspired! And, so far, he’s only just getting measured at Madame Malkin’s.

I love this Harry!

Note to math-phobics: High-end math and physics references only, as in Numb3rs and/or Big Bang Theory.

1:08PM - Last two years in a nutshell...

I originally wrote this in response to a comment from the lovely [info]leianora, then thought that perhaps it should have a bit wider dissemination.

You might want to re-read the subject before clicking here so you know what to expect )

Which brings us to today, one year and 364 days since I was laid off -- the day I returned to work from The Witching Hour.

This weekend I'm making a *planned* visit to sisters 1 and 5. The children have asked that I visit more often, now that they're only a 6-hour drive away instead of 14. I think I can handle that.

6:49PM - Stop what you're doing!!!

Go back up your files!

Yes, right now.

I mean it!

The Internet will still be there when you're finished.

We all know we should do this regularly, but how many actually do? If your hard drive suddenly decides to commit suicide, will you be trying to kick your own @ss, as I am, for losing everything? Or will you only have to recreate a small portion of your life?

Choose option B. It hurts less.

12:30AM - Tell Me a Secret

I'll start: there's still a monster under my bed. The good news is, the matress still protects me.

Sometimes, as I'm trying to get comfortable before sleep or when I'm just waking, my arm or leg will dangle over the side of the bed. Once I notice it, I can't leave it there. Oh, I can for a while, but it makes me feel too vulnerable and I just can't relax. I just know a hand is going to reach up and grab me if I do.

I try to tell myself that nothing will happen if I leave my arm there, but apparently I'm not very convincing.

It feels silly to be in my 40s and still not be able to hang my hand over the side of the bed. It's even sillier when you consider that I have a waterbed, and thus nobody could possibly be under it. Then again, that's why it's called a phobia: even when you know it's silly, no amount of logic will convince the back-brain that it's safe.

So, tell me a secret. Anonymous postings okay.

11:12PM

Well, life got very busy for a while there. I haven't had time to read my f-list since about the 19th of last month or so.

So, whilst catching up, I discovered that [info]tarlwen had tagged me for a meme. Honestly, I only took so long because I didn't see it until now. :)

10:58AM - Pet the kitties

It's time once again for the Cats Birthday Drabble fic exchange!

Last year, my first time participating, I labored over my submission to keep it to 100 words, only to find at the end that not everybody did that. (The one written for me was delightful.)

So this year, I didn't worry about the word count. Which is good, because it ended up being a complete failure of the drabble form. It started off at 821 words, which I only pared down because it was too long for a comment post. When I finally got it down so it would fit (which effort included removing all formatting characters), it was close enough to a round number that I worked on it a bit to make it appear I was using some length standard.

I needed lots of room, because of the prompt the cats assigned to me. It was a bit intimidating writing Snarry for [info]snapetoy, a major Snarry fan, writer, and promoter. Plus, she's Australian, which means no hanky-panky for under18!Harry.

The Cats Birthday post is here. My submission, at 700 words, can be found here. Yes, I'm thinking about expanding it. No, I don't know when that might be.

The story written for me is here.

3:44AM - I've committed fiction!!

Title: Starry Eyed
By: [info]fyrebird
Rating: PG-13 for language
Word count: 1000, not counting title, header, or footnotes

Characters: Harry, Ron, Hermione
Pairings: Harry/Draco implied, Snape/Filch implied
Warnings: mention of BDSM, discussion of "bits"

Challenge: Harry/anyone, naming a new constellation
Inspired by [info]cursive's challenge on [info]hpshortfics, but it wasn't short enough.

Beta by the wonderful (and awake when I needed her) [info]alliekatgal.

Summary: A moment of silliness causes a secret to slip.

Pssst! Want to read a story? )

2:17AM - Anybody awake?

I just finished a short, non-explicit story that needs a quick beta. 1000 words; Harry/Draco and Snape/Filch both implied.

Anyone?

ETA: Doesn't really have to be quick. It's too long for the challenge it was posted for, so we have plenty of time. I just got excited because it's the first thing I've written since The Witching Hour.

8:24PM - Looking for a fic chapter

Starting with my friends list, first, before going out to the communities.

I'm missing chapter 6 from Bramblerose Proudfoot's "Phoenix Mark," a WIP that was never finished. This fic has apparently been taken offline, so now I'm stuck with a missing chapter!

Hugs and adoration to anybody who can get this to me.

And, new journal layout! Talk about time-wasters... I spent all afternoon playing and tweaking. Still not done.

12:22PM - And another one...

In a comment on my other journal, [info]cluegirl countered with a challenge to name the Seven Cardinal Virtues.

Once again, I got only six. Have at.

ETA: We were wrong!!
Just looked them up, and two of the ones I thought I had were not on the list. So I only got four. :(

1:20AM - Unofficial Poll

Apologies to those friended on both of my journals, who will see this twice.

At a recent gathering of friends, the subject of the Seven Deadly Sins arose. I could only name six.

Off the top of your head, how many can you name?

This is purely an unofficial poll out of sheer curiosity, but please don't cheat. Don't ask anybody else, don't look it up online... and don't read the rest of the comments before you've posted yours.

Please click on "take wing" ("Leave a comment"), not on "X flights of fancy" (x comments), so as not to taint your answer.

Feel free to post this in your own journal, if you're curious as to how well-read (or well-sinned) your friends are.
